A life jacket, also called a personal flotation device (PFD), is designed to keep a person afloat and reduce the risk of drowning in the water.

Common types include:

  • Type I (Offshore): Highest buoyancy; turns most unconscious wearers face-up. Best for open water.
  • Type II (Nearshore): Good for calmer inland waters and short rescues.
  • Type III (Flotation aid): Comfortable for kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding, and water sports.
  • Inflatable PFDs: Lightweight and comfortable, but require manual or automatic inflation and are generally intended for older users.

When choosing a life jacket, make sure it:

  • Fits snugly without riding up.
  • Is appropriate for the wearer's weight and chest size.
  • Is approved by your country's safety authority
  • Matches the activity you'll be doing (boating, kayaking, sailing, etc.).
